The Songkran Water Festival

Songkran is the Thai traditional New Year which starts on April 13 of every year. Songkran is a three day celebration. The first day of Songkran is on April 13 and is called Maha which means the day that marks the end of the old year, April 14 the second day, is called Wan Nao which is the day after. The third and final day April 15 is Wan Thaloeng Sok which is the day New Year begins. During Songkran, the Thai people that come from the rural areas, who are working in the city usually return home to celebrate the festival with their friends and families.
For the people that visit Thailand from abrod this can be quite an experience. Songkran for most is three days of non stop fun, it is kinda like a national water park. There is no place in Thailand that is safe from having fun. Everywhere you go youre going to get wet and have fun. Getting doused repeatedly with water during this time of year is good relief from the heat for this part of the year gets pretty hot.
During Songkran I have heard many people say and I quote "this is the most fun I have ever had ! ". I have probably said that very same thing myself too. Songkran the Water Festival is really kinda hard to describe in words. One really has to experience this to know just what it is like. If I were asked to describe Songkran in one sentance I would have to say "fun, fun and more fun".
For some folks getting wet in this manner is not fun to them, the only thing I can suggest to these folks is stay home for the three days during Songkran.
